Biography

Mufit Akinc is professor the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University. He was also chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department from 1995 to 2006 and served as interim Dean of engineering college in 2012-2013. Currently, he is the Professor-in charge of International Engagements for the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and a Ph.D. degree in ceramic engineering from Iowa State University. Before joining ISU as a faculty member in 1981, he was an assistant professor at Kansas State University (1977–1979) and at Middle East Technical University, Turkey (1979–1981). He also served as a liaison scientist at US Office of Naval Research (ONR)-Europe in London (1992–1993) and as curriculum chair of the materials science program at National Technological University (1998–2003). Professor Akinc has recently received Fulbright Senior Lecturer Award for lecturing at Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey. Akinc’s research interests include synthesis and processing of ceramic powders and fibers, intermetallics, bioinspired nano materials, IR transmitting materials, and polymer composite repair. Akinc has published over 180 articles and seven patents. He made approximately 80 invited and 150 contributed talks and lectures around to world. He was appointed three times as a consultant to the United Nations to assist governments of Korea and Turkey. He was also visiting professor at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1996 and 1997. He was a senior Fulbright lecturer in 2009 at Koc University, Istanbul Turkey, and EU consultant to Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland. He served as an International Advisor to Japan’s National Institute of Materials Science between 2006 and 2010. Dr. Akinc has been elected to the European Academy of Sciences in 2003. He is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the ASM International, and The AAAS. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of ASM in 2008. He is a recipient of the ISU Alumni Association’s faculty citation and received Ross Coffin Purdy Award (Best paper published in 2005) by the American Ceramic Society in 2006. Akinc also served as an associate editor of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society for several years.
